Camp Hohepa Incorporated is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for participants and others within their camping and fishing activities.

We expect everyone to share in our commitment to avoid all accidents and incidents, which may cause personal injury, property damage or loss of any kind.

We expect our participants to act safely at all times to ensure their own welfare and that of their fellow participants whilst on camp.

We will ensure the safety of our participants by:

  1. Providing and maintaining a safe environment to carry out the camp activities
  2. Ensuring that all camp equipment is safe
  3. Checking out safe boundaries for the camp activities
  4. Developing and implementing emergency procedures
  5. Providing personal lifejackets to each participant whilst on camp.

To achieve this we will:

  1. Systematically identify all hazards.  Where these hazards are identified we will take all practicable steps to eliminate, isolate, and or minimise these hazards to prevent any injury or damage.
  2. Inform participants of these hazards, and if necessary deem them out of bounds.
  3. Inform all participants of our emergency procedures.
  4. Record all incidents and accidents in our camping and fishing programmes and take all practicable steps tp prevent these from happening.
  5. Carry out planned self inspections to monitor our safety issues.

Camp Hohepa Incorporated Participant information to be supplied to Director

The following information is to be supplied to the Camp Hohepa Director prior to Participants arriving at the camp and a form is provided to them to fill in and sign:

Name and date of birth of child

Name of Parent or Guardian attending with the child

Address and contact numbers of participants.

The name and day and night contact numbers of someone who can be contacted in the event of an emergency.

A description of any medical problems participants may have, and a description of any medication required to be taken whilst on camp.

A description of any food or drink participants may be allergic to.

A description of any allergies participants may have.

A description of any food participants may not like.

Parent or guardian sign the document acknowledging that they will remove their child from the camp if he or she is deemed to have a disruptive influence on the group, or behaves in a manner deemed to be unacceptable by the camp Director.  If, for any reason the child is unaccompanied, the parent or guardian will come and collect their child if contacted by the camp Director for the above behavioural problems.

Camp Hohepa Staffing – child ratios to adults, staff qualifications, the use of sea transport and camp general supervision and safety.

The maximum number of children on the camp is 12 and they are to be accompanied by one parent or guardian.  This gives a 1 to 1 ratio of children to adults.

There is a minimum of 4 Camp Hohepa organisers / supervisors including the Camp Director.

Of the 4 Camp organisers, 2 must hold a current first aid workplace certificate.

All sea transport used by the Camp organisers will be in an approved Safe Ship Management systems and will be operated by qualified skippers.

Fishing activities carried out will be land based (surfcasting), and under the strict control of the camp organisers and will be a group activity.  All hazards will be identified and documented prior to the group’s arrival at the fishing sites.

No running unless in extreme emergency situations is a base rule of the camp.

No smoking is permitted, and no alcohol is permitted on the campsite.

No fires are permitted at the camp and cooking will be by gas.

Each of the 4 camp organisers / supervisors will carry a 2-way UHF radio and will be in contact with each other at all times. 

The will be two portable VHF radios carried by two supervisors that are able to communicate with the Auckland Coastguard in the event of a sea or other emergency.  There will be a VHF base radio at the camp base for general communications with sea transport and the groups that are away from the camp for fishing and other activities.

All organisers / supervisors will be identified by bright green fluro vests marked with a Camp Hohepa logo.

All participants will be asked to wear a hat, and apply sun block daily.

Sun block and insect repellent will be supplied for the use of participants.

Whilst participating in the land based fishing activities, stout footwear must be worn at all times.

Camp Hohepa safety Information for Participants

Every participant of the camp will take steps to ensure:

1 Their own safety.

2 That no action or inaction of the participant causes harm to any other person.

3 They know what to do in an emergency, ie life ring drill, life jacket operation, falling in the water.

4 Where all the necessary safety gear or equipment and materials are kept.

5 They know which staff members are the first aiders for the camp.

6 How to use emergency communication equipment.

7 They keep to the base camp rule of no running.

8 Adults will be taught to use the VHF and UHF communications equipment so that they can use it in cases of emerency.
