Take a quick look at this little quip about kids of the 40's 50's 60's and 70's. Its one of the reasons we do this.

Hi there from Bill and Linda,

The next Dads and Lads camp is proposed for the Te Puke area and will be held (depending on sufficient numbers) at the Rotorua Fishing Club's fishing camp site on the northern end of the Matata Straight in the Bay of Plenty. The cost is $150 per Dad and Lad team. If you'd like to register your interest in joining us for this just email us here.

About Camp Ho

Camp Hohepa is a registered non-profit organisation.

New Camp Format: The way the camps have been run for the past 16 years, is we provided the adult staff but the camp programme came to the point where we as organisers felt that in light of OSH regulations, and we as volunteer organisers were taking on too much risk in terms of the responsibility of looking after other people's children and even though we take every precaution with our safety factors, such as a 2 to 1 adult ratio, lifejackets etc, we could now very easily find ourselves in Court over a myriad of situations that may arise from our camp activities. We want the camps to continue, so we have come up with a solution. We now invite a parent or guardian to participate in the camp. The onus of child responsibilty will switch from us as organisers to the participating parent. We will provide a programme as normal with the usual safety features for the group included, but the personal safety of the child outside these parameters falls to the parent or guardian. But even so, if the parent or guardian decides that any camp activity is too challenging for their child or themselves for that matter, then they don't need to participate. Parents are also directly responsible for their childs behavior whilst on the camp. If any child's behavior is too disruptive, they may be asked to leave. We have only ever had to do this once. Over the past two years we have found that what we now call Dads and Lads weekends are working really well, and this is the way we intend to go with all future camps. If you participated in the old week long camps you were in deed very lucky.

Child Age Group: The preferred age for a participating child is 9 to 14

What to bring camping : People will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, fishing clothes, including a few warm things like a windbreaker jacket, track pants, jersey, a raincoat, a beanie, toilet gear and 2 towels and togs. Stout footwear is required to be safe while rock fishing (no jandels). A fishing rod and reel. The reel must be of a type that can be cast. A fixed spool reel or eggbeater as they're known would be best. The reel should be fitted with 6kg to 9kg line. (If you don't have a rod and reel, please let us know prior to the camp so we can make arrangements to have one available for you.

People need to be able to get themselves to the camp venues, and may be asked to transport themselves to other fishing venues away from the base camp.

We Provide: The camp programme, a complementary cap, a lifejacket will be issued to each participant if any 'on the water' activity is involved, meals and various prizes for a range of camp activities.

Fees: The fees to cover both Dad and Lad is $150. This covers camp fees, and meals. If you can't afford the fee, you may be able to arrange sponsorship through service clubs like Lions, Rotary , or the local pub. Camp Ho Inc covers prizes etc.

About us and the Camp: The camps have been running now since 1991 and we have a dedicated team of adults who assist us with the camps, and some have been with us since the camps started 15 years ago. Bill Hohepa is the principal of the camp, and his vast experience and fishing knowhow is taught to the group. We have a minimum of two qualified 1st aiders with the camp. The formula for the camp programme has worked well over the years, with lessons at set times, fishing at set times, and meals at set times, although if the fishing is good, these might be changed slightly. The group is divided into 5 teams of 4, with parents assisting. Teams will compete for points throughout the programme, with prizes given for the teams with the most points at the end of the camp. There are also prizes for the biggest fish.
